Google Search Console
See how your sites perform in Google Search.
What you get
Section titled “What you get”| Metric | Meaning | Period value |
|---|---|---|
| Clicks | Clicks from Google Search results to your site | Sum of the days |
| Impressions | How often your site appeared in results | Sum of the days |
Search Console counts days in Pacific time (America/Los_Angeles), and so does Metribay. Google publishes fresh numbers first and final ones two or three days later. Metribay shows the fresh numbers as provisional and swaps in the final ones when they’re ready.
Before you start
Section titled “Before you start”You need Owner access to the Search Console property, so you can add a user, and a Google service account.
If you’ve already set one up for Google Analytics 4, reuse it. You only need to enable one more API and add it to Search Console.
Step 1: Prepare the service account
Section titled “Step 1: Prepare the service account”-
In the Google Cloud console, go to APIs & Services → Library and enable the Google Search Console API.
-
If you don’t have a service account yet, follow step 1 of the Google Analytics guide to create one and download its JSON key. You can skip the Analytics APIs.
-
Copy the service account’s email address. It ends in
iam.gserviceaccount.com.
Step 2: Add it to your property
Section titled “Step 2: Add it to your property”-
Open Search Console and choose the property.
-
Go to Settings → Users and permissions and select Add user.
-
Paste the service account’s email address and choose Restricted permission. Restricted is read-only and all Metribay needs.
-
Select Add. Repeat for every property you want to track.
Step 3: Connect it in Metribay
Section titled “Step 3: Connect it in Metribay”-
Select Add source and choose Google Search Console.
-
Pick your saved Google account, or open Use your own credentials and paste the whole JSON key into Service account JSON.
-
Choose the property from the list.
-
Pick a project and select Connect and start import.
Enter the property by hand
Section titled “Enter the property by hand”Open Enter a resource manually and type the property exactly as Search Console names it:
- Domain property:
sc-domain:example.com - URL-prefix property: the full address, like
https://www.example.com/, including the trailing slash
If collection fails
Section titled “If collection fails”The property isn’t listed. The service account isn’t a user of it yet, or the Search Console API isn’t enabled. Fix that, then select Refresh resources.
Wrong property type. https://example.com/ and sc-domain:example.com are different properties in Search Console. Use the one you added the service account to.
Numbers are a few days behind. That’s normal. Search Console data usually arrives with a delay of two to three days, and the source may show Delayed now and then.
